Japanese Knotweed is a fast spreading weed that was originally introduced in Britain in the nineteenth century as an ornamental plant, but is now commonly found along railway lines, riverbanks, roads and footpaths, in graveyards, on derelict sites or anywhere that it has been dumped, dropped or deposited.

A tiny piece the size of a small finger nail can grow and produce a plant with roots as deep as 4 metres and a lateral span of 7 meters. Under the UK wildlife and countryside act it is illegal to cause it to grow in the wild, due to the extreme nature in which it spreads.

It is important to deal with this invader as soon as possible and developers are recommended to get early advice in order to clear any building site at pre-planning stage, if possible. The more time allowed to clear the site, the cheaper and more effective the treatment will be.
